ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

AI Agents Must Earn Authority.

“Former Meta security chief says giving AI agents your financial logins is totally insane.” Now this is a practical, sensible, and from our perspective a common sense piece of advice from someone who clearly comprehends ramifications of such actions. It seems each new day brings down right spooky accounts of what has been done through AI, and even darker predictions of what is to come. The warning about giving AI agents access to financial accounts is entirely legitimate. It is something we can all embrace. Financial credentials, transaction authority, and autonomous decision making are a potentially dangerous combination when trust and accountability have not been established.

Yet, beneath these concerns lies an interesting experiment. Several platforms including OpenClaw, frontier model harnesses and others have democratized access to experimentation. Early adopters are pushing the boundaries of AI autonomy, exploring what is possible and, in some cases, learning expensive lessons along the way. The potential loss of funds is very real, but so is the value of experimentation in advancing innovation.

Financial services offer an interesting parallel. Large, regulated banks invest enormous resources in maintaining compliance and navigating regulatory barriers. Innovation, by its very nature, challenges established boundaries. Historically, competitive pressures and emerging technologies have helped accelerate change. Without that tension, perhaps we’d still be licking stamps, writing checks, and stuffing envelopes instead of enjoying the convenience of Zelle and other P2P platforms.

The same tension is emerging with Agentic AI. The answer cannot be unrestricted autonomy, nor should it be resistance to experimentation. AI agents must earn authority through demonstrated reliability. That authority must be explicitly delegated, bounded by permissions, and continuously audited. Trust is earned, not inherited from the human granting access.

The question is not whether AI agents will participate in financial transactions, but how we responsibly enable that future without surrendering control.
